finance-related backgrounds influence corporate innovation. Using data from
U.S. public firms, we show that CEOs with extensive finance experience significantly
reduce innovation, as measured by patent valuation, patent counts, and R&D
intensity. Instrumental variable analysis and other robustness checks confirm
these results. Our findings highlight a critical trade-off: finance-oriented
CEOs enhance financial discipline but inadvertently constrain innovation,
underscoring the strategic implications of executives’ functional backgrounds
for firms’ long-term growth and competitiveness 』
